The Ministry of Transport requires that all vehicles undergo an annual MOT test to measure the road-worthiness, exhaust emissions and safety of the specific vehicle over three years that are used on public roads.

To ensure a comprehensive and thorough inspection of the vehicle, and that the minimum testing requirements of the test are met, the following features are examined;

  • Vehicle structure
  • Fuel System
  • Exhaust Emission
  • Exhaust System
  • Seatbelts
  • Seats
  • Doors
  • Mirrors
  • Brakes
  • Tyres and Wheels
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Horn
  • Windscreen
  • Wipers/Washers
  • Bonnet
  • Vehicle ID Number
  • Lights
  • Registration Plates

The MOT test takes up to 50 minutes to complete and the vehicle’s V5 document must also be brought in order for the MOT test to take place. If the MOT test fails due to failed components, then there is usually a requirement of having these amended before a retest can take place.

Upon completion of a successful MOT test, a new computer printed MOT certificate is issued, which is the receipt for the MOT test and shows the information that would be on the MOT database. However, the MOT test is not a guarantee that the vehicle will remain safe for the following year.
